Today, the seas were very calm, so we took the opportunity to practice our celestial navigation skills. Paul walked me through how to use the sextant and the navigation tables to calculate our position. If all our onboard navigation systems, including the compass, were to fail, this method would be our final backup for determining where we are. In today’s world, where even watches are equipped with GPS, few sailors know how to navigate using the sun or stars. That said, it definitely takes practice to take accurate measurements. So I will take the opportunity to keep practicing.
